THRYMR is a jötunn (giant) from Norse mythology, best known for stealing Mjölnir, the powerful hammer of the thunder god Thor. His name is sometimes spelled Þrymr in Old Norse texts. The story of Thrymr is told in the Poetic Edda, specifically in the poem “Þrymskviða.” In the tale, Thrymr hides Thor's hammer and demands the goddess Freyja as his bride in exchange for its return. When Thor wakes up and finds his hammer missing, he is furious.

With the help of Loki, the trickster god, they discover that Thrymr is the thief. To retrieve Mjölnir, Thor disguises himself as Freyja and travels to Jötunheimr (the land of the giants) to marry Thrymr. During the wedding feast, Thor's unusual behavior arouses suspicion—he eats and drinks more than any bride should. Loki, also in disguise, explains away Thor's actions. Eventually, Thrymr brings out Mjölnir to bless the bride, and Thor grabs the hammer, revealing his true identity. He then slays Thrymr and the other giants in a dramatic and violent climax. Thrymr's story is often seen as both humorous and heroic, showcasing themes of deception, strength, and the reclaiming of power.
