SUTTUNG is a giant (jotner) from Norse mythology, best known for guarding the mead of poetry (skaldic mead or skáldskaparmjöðr). According to the myths, this magical mead grants the drinker the gift of poetry and wisdom. The mead was originally created from the blood of the wise being Kvasir, who was killed by two dwarfs, Fjalar and Galar. These dwarfs brewed his blood with honey to create the mead. After some chaotic events, they gave the mead to Suttung as compensation for killing his parents. Suttung, not trusting anyone, hid the mead deep inside a mountain called Hnitbjorg, and he set his daughter, Gunnlöð, as its guardian.

Later, the god Odin desired the mead to bring its powers to the gods and to humanity. Disguising himself and using cunning, Odin tricked Suttung's brother, Baugi, into helping him reach Hnitbjorg. There, Odin seduced Gunnlöð, winning three nights with her. In return, she allowed him to drink three draughts of the mead — but Odin drank all of it in one go! He transformed into an eagle and fled back to Asgard, pursued by Suttung (also in eagle form). Odin narrowly escaped and shared the mead among the gods and gifted mortals. Suttung, therefore, represents the strict guardian of knowledge and inspiration, while Odin's theft highlights the Norse admiration for cunning and ambition when it comes to acquiring wisdom.
