In Norse mythology, SKRYMIR is a powerful and enigmatic jötunn who plays a central role in one of the most famous tales from the Prose Edda, specifically in the journey of Thor, Loki, and their companions to the realm of the giants. Skrymir is often identified with Utgard-Loki, the ruler of Útgarðr, the fortress of the giants, although some scholars interpret them as two distinct beings. Regardless, both are deeply associated with illusion, trickery, and immense strength. The story unfolds as Thor, the god of thunder, travels with Loki and two human servants, Tjalfe (Þjálfi) and Röskva (Rǫskva), to the land of the jötnar. On their journey, they encounter a colossal figure sleeping under a tree. This is Skrymir, whose name means “big boaster” or “the huge one.” When he wakes, he offers to accompany them and carry their provisions in his immense sack.

From the start, Skrymir demonstrates overwhelming strength and control. When Thor tries to open the food bag at night and cannot undo the knot, he grows frustrated and attempts to kill Skrymir while he sleeps. Thor strikes him on the head with Mjölnir, his mighty hammer. To Thor's astonishment, Skrymir merely stirs and casually comments that perhaps a leaf or acorn fell on him. Thor repeats his attack two more times over the following nights, each time with increased fury—yet Skrymir remains unharmed, unfazed, and slightly amused. Eventually, the travelers arrive at Utgard, a vast hall ruled by Utgard-Loki, who appears as a powerful and wise giant king. There, Thor and his companions are challenged to a series of contests meant to test their abilities.
