SIGYN is a goddess in Norse mythology, best known as the loyal wife of Loki. She plays a central role in the myth of his punishment following Balder's death. When the gods captured and punished Loki for his involvement in Balder's demise, they bound him with his sons' entrails in a cave, where a venomous serpent dripped its corrosive poison onto his face. Sigyn demonstrated unwavering loyalty by staying by his side and holding a bowl over his face to catch the poison. However, whenever she had to empty the bowl, the venom would fall onto Loki, causing him to writhe in pain—a phenomenon said to be the origin of earthquakes. Sigyn's character is often associated with loyalty, devotion, and a patient strength rarely seen among the goddesses in Norse mythology. She is not frequently mentioned in ancient texts, making her a somewhat mysterious figure, but her role as Loki's supportive partner highlights a different side of the otherwise chaotic and unpredictable god. Sigyn’s lineage is not explicitly mentioned in the old Norse texts, and her origin remains uncertain. In Snorri’s Edda, she is referred to only as Loki’s wife, but no information is given about her parents or whether she belongs to the Aesir, the Vanir, or another group of gods or beings.

Since she is married to Loki—who belongs to the jötunn (giant) race but also holds a unique position among the Aesir—it’s unclear whether she herself is a goddess of the Aesir, or perhaps a jötunn. Some interpretations suggest she might be an ásynja (a goddess among the Aesir), while others speculate that she could belong to the giant race like Loki.

Due to the lack of clear sources, Sigyn’s background remains a mystery, which adds to her enigmatic role in Norse mythology.
