SIGRDRÍFA, also often identified with Brynhildr (or Brünnhilde in Germanic tradition), is a fascinating figure from Norse mythology. She is described as a valkyrie, one of the warrior maidens who serve Odin by choosing the slain worthy of Valhalla. Sigrdrífa appears most notably in the Poetic Edda, particularly in the poems Sigrdrífumál ("The Lay of Sigrdrífa") and Fáfnismál, and also in later prose traditions like the Völsunga saga.

In Sigrdrífumál, she is depicted as a wise, almost mystical figure. After disobeying Odin — typically by choosing the wrong side in a battle — she is punished: she is pricked with a sleep thorn and put into an enchanted sleep, trapped inside a shield-wall on a mountaintop. It is there that she is discovered by the hero Sigurd (or Siegfried in Germanic tradition), who awakens her.

After waking, Sigrdrífa imparts to Sigurd a series of magical runic wisdoms and teachings about ethics, healing, battle, and magic. In some versions, Sigrdrífa and Brynhildr are treated as the same person, while in others, they are distinct but similar figures. Over time, especially through the influence of the Germanic Nibelungenlied and Richard Wagner's operas (Der Ring des Nibelungen), the identities of Brynhildr and Sigrdrífa were fused completely.
