NERTHUS is a goddess from Germanic mythology, associated with the earth, fertility, and peace. She is mentioned by the Roman historian Tacitus in Germania (1st century CE), where he describes how Germanic tribes worshipped her as a deity of prosperity and harmony. According to Tacitus, Nerthus' sacred site was located on an island where her cart was kept, and only priests were allowed to touch it.

When the goddess was taken in procession among the people, weapons were put away, and a time of peace and celebration followed. After the ceremony, the cart and its attendants were ritually cleansed in a lake, and the priests who had seen the goddess were often sacrificed to preserve her mystery. Nerthus' role as a goddess of earth and fertility has led some to interpret her as a female counterpart to Njord, the Norse god of the sea and wealth. The two share certain similarities, particularly their connection to prosperity and natural cycles. Some theories suggest that Nerthus and Njord might have been male and female aspects of the same deity, hinting at an earlier tradition where Njord may have originally had a feminine form or was more ambiguous in origin.

Although Tacitus provides one of the only written accounts of Nerthus' worship, archaeological findings and later mythological parallels suggest that she may have been a significant deity in early Germanic religious traditions. Her cult might have had connections to later Norse goddesses such as Freyja or Jörð, who also represent fertility, natural forces, and divine femininity. Nerthus remains a fascinating and mysterious figure in mythology—a goddess whose presence symbolized the harmony between humans and nature, and whose worship emphasized the importance of peace and fertility in early Germanic societies.
