She is portrayed as a valkyrie, one of the supernatural warrior maidens who serve Odin and influence the outcomes of battles by choosing who will live and who will die. In the mythology, Kára stands out not only for her divine role in warfare but also for her deep emotional and spiritual connection to the mortal hero Helgi, whom she loves and aids. This connection is thought to be a continuation of a previous life, as Kára is considered the reincarnation of Sigrún, another valkyrie who loved Helgi Hundingsbane, and Helgi Haddingjaskati is in turn seen as the reborn Helgi Hundingsbane. This theme of cyclical love and destiny across lifetimes is central to the Helgi lays and deeply embedded in Norse belief, where fate (or wyrd) governs all things, and even the gods are subject to its unchangeable course.

Kára's role in the story is both magical and tragic. During Helgi's battles, she flies above him in the form of a swan—an image rich with symbolic and magical connotations in Norse and wider Germanic folklore. From the air, she sings runes and casts spells to protect him and ensure his success. This use of shape-shifting and incantation aligns with the concept of seidhr, a Norse form of sorcery often practiced by women and associated with fate manipulation and battle magic. Kára, in her swan-form, becomes a living embodiment of divine intervention and the fragility of fate. Her powers, however, are tragically undone when Helgi, unaware of the bird's true identity, accidentally strikes and kills the swan during a chaotic moment in battle. With the death of the swan, Kára's protective magic vanishes, and Helgi is left exposed and vulnerable, leading to his downfall. The story ends in sorrow, as both the valkyrie and her beloved are separated by death, victims of a fate they could not ultimately escape.
