HRUNGNIR is one of the most notorious giants in Norse mythology, representing brute strength, stubbornness, and the chaotic forces of nature. He belonged to the race of stone giants and was famous for having a head and heart made of stone, as well as for riding the massive stone horse Gullfaxi – a steed so swift that even Odin's Sleipnir struggled to match its speed. According to the Prose Edda by Snorri Sturluson, Hrungnir's conflict with the gods began when he was invited to Asgard in a moment of misplaced hospitality. After drinking heavily, he became belligerent and boastful, claiming he would abduct the goddesses Freya and Sif and destroy Asgard itself.

This outrage prompted Thor to challenge him to a duel. The battle took place at the plain of Grjótúnagard. Hrungnir arrived wielding a colossal stone club and was accompanied by a clay giant, created by the other jötnar to aid him. Thor came armed with his mighty hammer Mjölnir and his servant Thjalfi. In the fierce confrontation, Hrungnir hurled his club at Thor, while Thor launched Mjölnir with unstoppable force. The two weapons collided in mid-air, but Mjölnir shattered both the club and Hrungnir – smashing into his stone skull and killing him instantly. Thor did not leave the battle unscathed. A shard of Hrungnir's skull lodged itself in Thor's forehead, and it took the magical powers of the sorceress Gróa to begin healing him. Hrungnir's tale is not just an action-packed myth – it also serves as an allegory for the eternal struggle between chaos and order, between divine strength and raw, destructive nature.
