HRIMTHUR (sometimes referred to as Hrimthurs or Hrimthursar, plural) is a figure from Norse mythology, described as a giant (jötunn) associated with frost and winter. In one famous myth from the Prose Edda (compiled by Snorri Sturluson), a mysterious builder—later revealed to be a Hrimthur—offers to construct an enormous wall around Asgard (the realm of the gods) to protect it from invaders like giants and other threats. The builder proposes to complete the wall within an impossibly short time—one winter—and asks for a steep payment: the goddess Freyja, the sun, and the moon. Initially, the gods refuse, but Loki persuades them to agree, thinking it would be impossible for the builder to finish in time. The gods also impose a condition: the builder must do the work without any help except that of his horse, Svadilfari.

However, the builder makes astonishing progress because his horse is extraordinarily strong and helpful. As it becomes clear that he might actually finish the wall in time, the gods grow worried. They blame Loki for the situation and order him to fix the problem. Loki shapeshifts into a mare (a female horse) and distracts Svadilfari, thus preventing the builder from completing the wall on schedule. When the builder's true nature as a Hrimthur (a frost giant) is revealed, Thor smashes his skull with his hammer, Mjölnir, killing him. Interestingly, from Loki's union with Svadilfari (while in mare form) is born the famous eight-legged horse Sleipnir, later ridden by Odin.
