This duality symbolizes her connection between life and death. Her realm, Helheim, is a cold and foggy world, separated from the land of the living by the river Gjöll and guarded by the monstrous hound Garm.

She accepts all souls into her domain without distinction, but those who end up in Helheim are often considered to have died an inglorious death, unlike the warriors who ascend to Valhalla or Folkvang. During Ragnarok, Hel plays an indirect role as her realm releases the dead to fight alongside Loki against the gods. Her name has survived in modern language as the root of the word "hell," though her domain was not originally a place of punishment but rather a predetermined resting place for the dead.
