BAUGI is a jötunn (giant) from Norse mythology who plays a key role in the myth involving the mead of poetry (skáldskaparmjöðr), also known as the mead of the skalds. This magical mead bestows the gift of poetry and wisdom on those who drink it, and it was originally created from the blood of the wise being Kvasir.

After the mead ends up in the hands of the giant Suttungr, he hides it in a mountain and sets his daughter Gunnlöð to guard it. Odin, desiring the mead for the gods (and also perhaps for humans who are skilled poets), embarks on a clever and deceptive mission to obtain it. Odin disguises himself as a laborer named Bölverk and seeks out Baugi, Suttungr's brother.

Odin offers to work for Baugi in exchange for a sip of the mead. After fulfilling his end of the bargain by performing hard labor (such as working for nine strong men who had all died under mysterious circumstances), Baugi agrees to help. The two travel to the mountain where the mead is hidden. Odin tricks Baugi into drilling a hole through the mountain with an auger. When the hole is finished, Odin transforms into a snake and slithers through the opening. Baugi tries to stab him with the auger as he goes through, but Odin escapes.

Inside, Odin seduces Gunnlöð and gains access to the mead. After spending three nights with her, she allows him to drink three draughts—one from each of the mead containers—but Odin drinks all of the mead in one go, transforms into an eagle, and flies back to Asgard.
