He is one of the jötnar but is depicted in various stories as a divine figure respected by both gods and mortals. Aegir is married to the sea goddess Ran, and together they have nine daughters, who are said to represent the waves of the sea.

He is known for his hospitality, frequently holding great feasts for the Aesir in his hall beneath the ocean, where he brews an endless supply of the finest mead. His massive copper cauldron, which was obtained by the god Thor, allows him to brew this divine drink. Despite his generous nature, Aegir also has a more formidable side, as he can stir the sea into a raging storm and send destruction upon sailors, especially if they fail to show him proper respect.
